Les héritiers de Downton Abbey ayant péri lors du naufrage du Titanic, la famille Crawley se retrouve dans une position délicate, les trois descendantes ne pouvant prétendre au titre de Lord Grantham. Or, le titre, le domaine et la fortune de la famille sont indissociables. Matthew Crawley, nouveau successeur et lointain cousin, arrive à Downton Abbey.
